About Fretsy

Last updated: October 2, 2026

Fretsy turns aimless noodling into focused guitar practice: exercises to play, quizzes to test yourself, technique play-alongs, lessons you can build and share, and a library of video lessons from guitar teacher Jason Moore. It's built for the woodshed — a way to break out of practicing the same three shapes and keep your ear and fingers moving.

How it works

  • Practice — tap for a random key, scale or arpeggio, and starting string; hear it on a real guitar sample and see it on the neck. Work through chord progressions with the target tones lit as the changes go by, or play along with a technique exercise at your own tempo.
  • Quizzes — fretboard, ear training, theory, and reading, at three levels, with the ones you miss brought back until you own them.
  • My Lessons — collect quizzes and practice runs into a lesson, work through it as a checklist, and share it as a single link.
  • Videos and Resources — video lessons with companion PDFs, for Fretsy Pro subscribers, with free samples to try.

The practice tools run entirely on your device. Their audio and content are bundled in the mobile app, so they work with no internet connection. The video lessons are delivered from our server and need a connection.

Privacy

No account needed. You can practice without signing in, and Fretsy has no analytics, advertising, or tracking. Your practice settings and lessons stay on your own device. If you subscribe, we keep only what is needed to unlock what you paid for — see the Privacy Policy for exactly what that is.

A note on accuracy

Fretsy is an educational practice aid, provided as-is and without warranty. Music theory has many conventions and enharmonic spellings; treat the suggestions as prompts for practice, not as authoritative notation.
